ArcIMS Author is the application used to create and author maps that will be used in ArcIMS services. Maps created using ArcIMS Author are saved as map configuration files with the .axl extension.

After ArcIMS Author is launched, users can add and symbolize vector layers. This includes setting symbology, including labels, setting scale dependent ranges to name a few. Likewise, ArcIMS Author directly supports the use of several raster formats including .jpeg, .gif, .png.
