ArcIMS is comprised of various components and the compenents collectively create the ArcIMS architecture. Components of the ArcIMS architecture include a web server, servlet engine, the ArcIMS Application Server, ArcIMS Monitor, ArcIMS Spatial Server and ArcIMS Tasker.

ArcIMS uses TCP/IP networking which allows for distributed ArcIMS configurations. All of the ArcIMS components can be installed on a single computer or distributed across many computers.
