The Business GIS Summit was first started in 1981 at the headquarters of Environment System Research Institute in the city of Redlands, California with 15 participants. As the company started expanding, the location was moved to Palm Springs and finally to San Diego.

The Business GIS Summit is a hub for businesses who understand the need and importance of GIS solutions. There are various businesses and government agencies from around the world who come together to exhibit their passion towards GIS.

The Business GIS Summit is the biggest GIS event in the world. It is held each year at the Convention Centre in San Diego. The opening kicks off with a morning Plenary Session featuring ESRI’s President Jack Dangermond addressing the audience with a welcome speech. The highlight of the event also features two keynote speakers who demonstrate innovative uses of GIS in different industry. Contributors from around the world participate and share their experience on how GIS has benefited their company to minimize risk and brought value to their businesses. Most attendees enjoy sessions that are presented by members of the commercial user community. These sessions are valuable across many industries including real estate, retail, logistics, economic development, manufacturing, banking, insurance, media, and transportation. Attendees from diverse industries, such as utilities, health care, transportation, telecommunications, and public safety, benefit from the summit.
