Esri MapData was introduced in November 2002 as a comprehensive TIGER/Line-based mapping solution for the United States. MapData included the MapLoader software, which provided a simple interface for selecting a set of thematic layers for a specific geographic region and compiling them into a single output folder.^[1]

Esri MapData has been replaced by Esri Data & Maps - ready-to-use basemaps and thematic map documents at many scales of geography. ESRI Data & Maps contains many types of map data, and the entire dataset can be read directly from the DVD in the media kit. All vector data is provided in Smart Data Compression (SDC) format. The HTML-based Help system contains information about Data & Maps and StreetMap North America.^[2]
