ArcGIS Publisher is an optional extension to Esri’s ArcGIS for Desktop that allows users to distribute and share geographic information system (GIS) maps, globes, and data, as seen in ArcMap or ArcGlobe. Data can be shared with a wide range of users locally, over networks, or on the Internet, allowing simultaneous viewing and interaction with maps. ArcGIS Publisher converts ArcMap (.mxd) and ArcGlobe (.3dd) documents into published map files (PMFs) that are viewable with ArcReader. ArcReader is comparable to Acrobat Reader while Publisher is similar to Adobe Acrobat [1]. Maps published from ArcMap are two-dimensional (2D), while those published from ArcGlobe are three-dimensional (3D) [2].

With ArcGIS Publisher, users can: [3]

  • Provide interactive maps and 3D globes
  • Protect maps
  • Create rich interactive maps
  • Provide efficient and controlled access to enterprise GIS data
  • Package the required data and maps
  • Build custom versions of ArcReader

ArcGIS Publisher is designed for: [4]

  • Organizations that need to distribute maps within their companies
  • Data providers that want to distribute pre-authored maps with their data
  • Government agencies that need to distribute data and maps to the public
  • GIS programmers who want to build custom map viewers

Key Features

The following are the key features of ArcGIS Publisher:
The Publisher extension includes the ArcReaderControl, allowing developers to create custom ArcReader applications

Publishing Maps

ArcGIS Publisher creates a PMF that contains all the necessary information needed to display the map in ArcReader. PMFs maintain settings defined by the author in ArcMap, such as layer properties, data frame properties, and page layout configuration. ArcGIS Publisher settings allow users to control the content that is available for use in ArcReader, specify ArcReader functionality, and define access criteria for the PMF [5].

Packaging Map Data with PMFs

ArcGIS Publisher provides a Data Packaging button in ArcMap that allows the sharing of a PMF with users that do not have access to the data. The Data Packaging button creates a bundle of maps and data for other ArcReader users to redistribute. The button selects one or more published maps and defines the properties of the data package. These data can either be packaged in its original format, industry-standard formats, or stored in a locked, highly-compressed format.

Custom ArcReader apps

ArcGIS Publisher includes the ArcReaderControl that allows developers to create custom ArcReader applications or embed ArcReader capabilities into existing applications. PublisherControls holds a set of components that is designed for rapid application development and also allows users to perform simple data queries to enhance the data exploration and navigation of the map. Custom applications created with PublisherControls can be freely distributed and used by any user [6].

System Requirements

ArcGIS Publisher requires ArcGIS for Desktop (Basic, Standard, or Advanced). However, system requirements are determined by user’s current product version and platform configuration. Please refer to the ArcGIS for Desktop specifications [7] for details.
